AIRTEA Project delegates visit the Agribusiness Incubation and Innovation Hub (AIIH)

Young Entrepreneur Challenge Fund Access Agriculture is currently running a Young Entrepreneur Challenge Fund (YECF) to select the next&nbsp;Entrepreneurs for Rural Access (ERAs) residing in Rwanda. This initiative is part of the Knowledge Centres for Organic Agriculture (KCOA) Africa project funded by GiZ.&nbsp; The four team&nbsp;winners will be awarded a solar powered Digisoft smart projector consisting of Access Agriculture farmer-training videos translated into Kinyarwanda, French and English among other languages. 1. BACKGROUND

Youth Engagement in Agriculture Network (YEAN) was founded in 2014 by young professional farmers in Kigali, Rwanda. YEAN&rsquo;s vision is to transform traditional subsistence agriculture into agribusiness through youth innovations as skilled and powerful weapons for leading change. YEAN provides extension and advisory services to individual farmers, farmers&rsquo; organizations and contracts to design and implement innovative youth led programs in extension and advisory sector. YEAN core business in the next 5 years (YEAN Vision 2025) is to continue as a private enterprise that capacitate producers to make informed decisions, adopt agricultural innovations which increase, diversify, specialize, and intensify agricultural production and market access. YEAN Vision 2025 is a five-year strategic plan that will enable 150,000 farmers to access private Extension and Advisory Service. YEAN also serves national and international partners with quality locally produced programming including hosting a network of farmers and conducting feasibility studies for investors in the agribusiness sector in Rwanda.&nbsp;

Youth Engagement in Agriculture Network (YEAN) is implementing a one-year project funded by the MasterCard Foundation. The project aims to pilot the use of hydroponics farming for transformative changes in the agriculture sector. As Rwanda&rsquo;s agricultural sector is heavily climate-dependent, in conjunction with ongoing climate change, rapidly increasing population, and the impact of this global pandemic; there is an urgent need to promote the use of new technology in this sector to tackle those challenges but also attract young people who shy away this sector while ensuring food security. 

This project will be implemented in Gasabo district, Kigali and Gicumbi district in the Northern Province, on the use of hydroponics for food and fodder production, respectively. Through this project, 50 young men and women will be equipped with skills and knowledge on the use of hydroponic where top performers will be provided with hydroponic kits to start and scale hydroponic farming businesses. The results of this project will significantly provide solutions on issues related to youth unemployment, current climate change impacts, issues imposed by COVID-19, and provide pertinent information on the use of hydroponic in Rwanda.

Youth Engagement in Agriculture Network (YEAN) seeks the services of a consultant to lead the research component of Rwanda Hydroponic Project, guide M&amp;E activities, conduct research and publish any paper or policy brief based on the findings of the project.

2. OVERVIEW OF THE ASSESSMENT

The Following are the specific objectives of the assignment: 

<ol>
	<li style="text-align:justify">To lead the research component of the Rwanda Hydroponic Project,</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">To conduct research and publish any paper or policy brief based on the findings of the project</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">To guide M&amp;E activities</li>
</ol>

Overall responsibilities of the research include:

<ol>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Develop the overall framework of the baseline assessment and other project research</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Design/adapt the baseline assessment and other project related research questionnaires and pre-test the questionnaires</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Incorporate changes into the questionnaires after pre-testing the questionnaires&nbsp;</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Train the field enumerators whenever needed</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Plan field work logistics, supervise assessment implementation and ensure quality control&nbsp;</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Develop the data entry program, arrange for data cleaning and entry&nbsp;</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Analyze report the findings of the assessment and other project related research, provide datasets and final documentation.</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Write and support the publication of peer reviewed articles based on the findings of the project</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">Design the M&amp;E system (setting up, implementation and reporting of M&amp;E findings)</li>
</ol>

Note:&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li style="text-align:justify">The inception reports shall highlight the planned timeline and work plan, literature review, detailed methodology, sampling framework, data collection and analysis tools, qualitative and/or quantitative protocols for data collection and analysis and, outline of the final reports shall be proposed for internal validation</li>
	<li style="text-align:justify">The final reports should be jargon free, clear and simply written. The main body of any report should not exceed 25 pages whenever possible and should include an executive summary, brief background, methods, findings and recommendations. Findings should be always backed up with relevant data, with reference to the data source and need to be specific. </li>
</ul>

3. DURATION 

The maximum number of days allocated for the research is 24 days. The M&amp;E activities will last the lifespan of the project. The researcher is expected to provide a detailed time schedule of various activities to be undertaken during the assignment. And major reports that are to be produced such as the inception report and end-term report of assessment / research, field visits and M&amp;E related reports should be mentioned in this section with the expected timeline for the delivery of each report. 

4. CONFIDENTIALITY AND DATA OWNERSHIP

The researcher will protect the confidentiality of those participating in the assessment or research at all stages. All data is confidential and is the property of YEAN. No data or other information from assessments and research will be released to third parties without the written approval of YEAN.

The researcher will turn over all data and questionnaires to YEAN and will not destroy information and material at the end of the project and after all data and original documentation has been delivered to YEAN.

4. BUDGET

The consultant shall provide detailed estimates of the budget including daily rates or per diems, travel, technical meetings, learning tour items, and other related activities.

5. QUALIFICAITON AND REQUIREMENTS

The role of  youth in potato value chain development

I am Henriette Aimee Mutangampundu, A young professional social media reporter of YEAN/YPARD social media reporting program. I was deployed together with other five young professionals to interact and live tweet the 11th Triennial African Potato Association Conference that reached 2.1 million impressions on social media. The five-day summit enabled me to learn further innovative solutions to postharvest management, processing and marketing system of potatoes and sweet potatoes. The science says that postharvest loss is a degradation in both quality and quantity of food production from harvest to consumption. The Post-harvest loss management strategy of the African Union mentions that roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption is wasted. The total quantitative food loss in sub-Saharan Africa has been estimated at 100 million metric tons per year.&nbsp;

Potatoes and sweet potatoes (Roots and tubers) are more perishable than grains; this is related to their higher moisture content and it affects the most rural farmers in developing countries. Having grown up in a community where potatoes and sweet potatoes are among the key source of family cash income. I further learnt from the Honorable Minister of Agriculture of Rwanda Dr.Gerardine Mukeshimana that sweet potatoes alone contribute to 21.6% of the total national requirements in terms of calories.&nbsp;

The Government of Rwanda has aggressively invested in post-harvest facilities, with 101 fully functional potato collection centers in major potato producing areas and additional investments are being made in collaboration with the private sector and other partners to increase capacity.&nbsp;

Why is it important to innovate around these crops in terms of managing the post harvest, technologies and marketing systems?&nbsp;

Data from the Rwanda Ministry of agriculture mentions that 70% of the Rwandan population is engaged in the agricultural sector, Potato and sweet potato cover respectively 3.9% and 5.2% of Rwanda&#39;s total cultivated area, the country has an annual consumption of 125kg for potato and 145 kg for sweet potato per person, Rwanda is the 3rd largest consumer of sweet potato in Africa and 6th largest potato producer in Africa.&nbsp;

CIP Rwanda and its partners gave me another excellent opportunity to tour the potato and sweet potato value chains where together with experts and delegates, I explored the progress in the industry ranging from mechanization, processing and vine multiplication.&nbsp;

Throughout my experience as a non-experienced young professional from a different educational background, I learned that there is always a wealth created when you are given proper knowledge, proper exposure and proper tools. I did not believe of a business in vine multiplications, young entrepreneurs are investing in sweet potato value chain like CARL Group with VITA Bread that is currently competitive on Rwanda market as well as the government willing and support to transform the potato and sweet potato value chain for higher end markets.&nbsp;

However, there is a need to keep reducing the losses of potato and sweet potato; we need proven technology adopted by smallholder farmers. These are modern technology in harvesting, handling, packing, transportation, storage and processing. We need to attract more youth and women to lead the processing and commercialization of potato and sweet potato products in different formats.&nbsp;

Everyone can have a stake! I may not become a potato farmer nor a processor but I can become a professional social media reporter for potato farmers and actors as a result of being exposed to this value chain during the 11th Triennial African Potato Association Conference held in Kigali from 25th to 29th August 2019. I commend YEAN and YPARD Rwanda initiative for young professionals social media reporters to have partnered with the International Potato Center (CIP).

BACKGROUND

Youth Engagement in Agriculture Network (YEAN) is an Agriculture Extension social enterprise that spreads agriculture information and facts to the community focusing on young people to lead in transforming traditional subsistence agriculture into agribusiness. YEAN is hosting a network of Young farmers, agronomist, investors and policymakers in Agriculture (YEAN Community), a network that we define as a new generation of professional farmers.

It was created after realizing that local community needs information to learn new knowledge and techniques to develop their career. YEAN shares stories from farmers to farmers, experts to farmers and vice-versa to inspire youth in leading the change in Agriculture and skills development that improves the living conditions of farmers for sustainable development. YEAN aims at inspiring change for the pursuit of beauty and excellent in young agri-preneurs and the community.

It is this regards that YEAN is organizing a one day &ldquo;Farmer Platform Summit&rdquo;, a way of bringingfarmers together in order for exchanging ideas and experience from farmers perspective in their routine farming activities . It will be the opportunity for the YEAN to launch officially the &ldquo;Farmer Platform and YEAN Community Network&rdquo; to the public.

Since its creation in 2014, attracted and served around 700 000 people on its website, where 250 scientific based agricultural articles were shared in Kinyarwanda, 1000 farmers on WhatsApp groups, 2300 followers on twitter and 5000 people of Facebook.&nbsp; It also shared success stories from young farmers and agronomists. YEAN social media channels have attracted attention to a big number of farmers that has created a such nice YEAN Community of people sharing farming information direct from owner to end user farmer.

This Farmer Platform Summit is planned to assemble 150 young farmers. 

ORGANIZERS: 

YEAN (Youth Engagement in Agriculture Network) will organize the Summit in Partnership with BDC (Business Development Center) and Rwanda Youth in Agribusiness Forum , as a way offbringing together the youth farmers , equipped with technical skills, doing agribusiness and providing the Technical Support services to the community in the field of Agriculture.

Uko ikwirakwizwa&nbsp;
Iyi ndwara ya RVF yagaragaye bwa mbere muri Kenya mu nkengero z’ikiyaga cya Naivasha ahagana mu 1930 ubu ikaba imaze hafi ikinyejana muri Afurika yo munsi y’ubutayu bwa Sahara. Dusobanukirwe n'Indwara ya Rift Valley Fever ifata amatungo n'abantu

I am Regis, and I grew up in an area where sweet potatoes are grown extensively in local areas. My country, Rwanda, was rated many times as one of the highest producers of sweet potatoes, growing approximately 80 kg per capita.

I grew up eating sweet potatoes daily prepared by my mother, and I didn&rsquo;t like them, but my strict mother kept me going on that meal without much complaint. It was our daily meal from morning to evening, three times a day without tasting any other alternative dish. That pushed me to wonder if there is no other way sweet potatoes can be processed to create another variety from the same raw material that could at least provide us with another alternative dish to enjoy.

As I grew up life was getting better for our family to the point we could switch the meal and have alternative dishes, but I couldn&rsquo;t forget the sweet potatoes that raised me and my neighborhood. That put me on a quest of finding out how an undervalued crop like sweet potatoes can be turned into a crop of unparalleled value that can be craved and eaten by everyone, instead of being considered food for the animals and for the poor families.

When I turned 12, I lost a best friend, and the community claimed that it was due to malnutrition. From that point on my dream was reinforced by the sorrow this loss caused me. I envisioned a big food-processing industry, basing its raw materials from what we grow locally, to help children who die every day from malnutrition when we have enough land to cultivate adequate crops.

Inspired by that dream, I studied Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics and took food science courses at university. In my research dissertation I conducted a study about orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, and in that research I conducted several interviews to understand the problems farmers of sweet potatoes face.

The results showed me that many have started to grow a new species of sweet potato called Orange-fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP), but they were not getting market for their products because it&rsquo;s considered a rural crop and food for animals.

That led me to embark on extensive research about that species, and fortunately I found out its many advantages to combat malnutrition diseases and save lives.

Vitamin A deficiency contributes to a significant number of blindness diseases and premature deaths of young children. Young children and pregnant women or lactating women are particularly at risk of Vitamin A deficiency. Yet orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are a great source of energy and beta-carotene, which is converted into Vitamin A in the body.

For that reason, we want to change the image of sweet potatoes, which is currently considered of little value in our community. We will achieve that by adding value to it, transforming it into a variety of products that all different classes of people can enjoy. Then the community can benefit from the vitamin A residing in these accessible and cheap sweet potatoes.

I am currently 25 years old, and I officially launched CARL Group two years ago. The Group focuses on buying sweet potatoes from farmers in the areas of Ruhango, Muhanga, Rulindo and Gakenke and turns them into various processed products. Farmers can benefit from their own crops by getting a considerable market for their products, and also a variety of other products to enjoy from their sweet potato crop.

I currently partner with 4 cooperatives in different districts of the country. I have a team of 14 people in the company, and I anticipate tripling both the numbers of the team members and the sweet potatoes processed very soon.

We currently produce the following products from these sweet potatoes, which we call VIT-A products: Crisps, cakes, bread and sweet potato donuts (our most popular product). Soon we are launching a new kind of sweet potato pasta (spaghetti).

This project was made possible by different funding sources, including the one awarded to us by the Ministry of Youth &amp; ICT in Rwanda in a competition entitled &ldquo;Youth Breaking the Cycle of Poverty&rdquo;. We also marketed our products in a recent &ldquo;MADE IN RWANDA&rdquo; Expo, where our products passed across media, and the responses were very promising.

We found a welcoming audience, hungry to consume all our product varieties. They were interested in them, and encouraged the community to grow more sweet potatoes.

Our mission is to give value to sweet potatoes, and move them from being subsistence crops to cash crops. Our vision is to become a market leader of sweet potatoes in the East African region.

Although CARL Group is producing its product varieties for local consumption, it has already finalized the spaghetti research and envisions these products having a reach beyond the borders of Rwanda to an international market.

Mu rwego rwo gukora ubuhinzi n&rsquo;ubworozi kinyamwuga ingufu za moteri nizo zikenerwa mu gukora imirimo itandukanye y&rsquo;ubuhinzi n&rsquo;ubworozi kugirango bigabanye umubare munini w&rsquo;abahinzi ugaragara mu gihe cyo gukora imirimo itandukanye y&rsquo;ubuhinzi, kwihutisha igihe no kongerera ubwiza umusaruro . Igihingwa gikenera ubutaka butunganyije neza kugirango gikure neza kandi gitange umusaruro; akaba ariyo mpanvu mbere yo gutera imyaka ubutaka bubanza gutunganywa. Iki gikorwa kigenda neza iyo gikoreshejwe imashini kuko yihuta kandi igahinga neza kurusha abantu.

Kurima

Ni igikorwa cyo kurima amasinde bwa mbere utegura umurima, imashini yambaye isuka irima yifashishwa mu kurima amasinde; gukoresha imashini bikaba byihutisha akazi bigatuma umuhinzi agendana n&rsquo;igihe, bigabanya amafaranga yakoreshwaga mu kurima, bitanga amasinde meza ku buryo igihingwa kibasha gukura neza, bigabanyiriza invune umuhinzi bikanagabanya umubare w&rsquo;abahinzi bari gukora iki gikorwa. Imashini irima hagati ya hegitari 2-3 ku munsi, ahantu hasaba abantu barenga 200 kuharima ku munsi.

Ni igikorwa cyo gusanza amasinde hategurwa intabire yo gutera. Imashini yambaye isuka isanza ikaba yifashishwa mugusanza amasinde, ikaba yihutisha akazi isanza neza kurusha abantu kandi ikagabanya n&rsquo;umubare w&rsquo;abantu bakora iki gikorwa. Ubutaka bwasanjijwe n&rsquo;imashini buba bumeze neza kuburyo ikimera cyibasha gushora imizi yacyo neza bikagifasha gukura neza.
